Getting to grips with golf is one of those love affairs that lasts a lifetime! Personally, I became hooked when my father talk me along to the golf course with him and let me hit a few balls on the green. I was only very small, but my father gave me a small putter and left me to get on with it. I wasn’t much good at first, but over time I improved, and as my putting improved, so did my love for the game.

Nothing much has changed. I am still passionate about putting, and still keen to share all the elements that I have personally learned in developing my own putting system.

If you think about a round of golf as a whole then between thirty and fifty percent of the shots you take will be on the putting green. So it is important to have a putting system in place to improve it and solidify it, so that you don’t leak shots on the green. Putting is an aspect of golf that often gets put to one side in favour of sexier topics to learn such as swing theory, driving and chipping. But the reality is that the rest of your golf game could be Tiger Woods-esque, but if you have a lousy short game than none of that is going to matter.

Personally, this was an aspect of my game that was costing me an awful lot of shots until I decided to do something about it. I looked around and tried all kinds of things, before stumbling on this guide here which really worked great for me.

Of course everyone is different, so do whatever works for you. But its funny how trying something new can really make things click into place really quickly (at least it did for me).

Getting A Putting System In Place

Developing a great short golf game requires you to focus on a few essential components. You will need to work on your own putting system if it’s going to develop into something worthwhile, but the good news is that this is actually easier then you think, and really requires you to focus on a few key components.

I will now discuss some different putting system tips that you can implement immediately to improve your putting.

Putting System Tips

The first component that you need to think about is the physical golf ball itself. You should mark your ball and be sure to wipe it clean and dry with a towel so that it will perform predictably when you hit it. This might be less important on a nice sunny day, but even then, especially in the spring time there is quite a lot of morning dew. So if you play very early in the morning, then even on a dry day your ball can be wet, and potentially pick up dust or particles which will throw off the path when you hit it. So it is worth getting into the habit of cleaning the ball, regardless of what the weather is like.

The second thing you need to do is to read the green. This obviously develops with time as you play more golf on different greens. But it is interesting to see how big a difference reading the green correctly can ultimately play to your score. You know this to be true if you consider the scores you shoot at your own golf club course, as opposed to when you go on holiday and play on a course you are unfamiliar with. I am sure that if you tot up the difference in the scores that you will find that the biggest difference between the two rounds was not to be found in driving or chipping. But rather in your putting. So you need a clear putting system in place to ensure that there is consistency in your performance whether you are playing at your home golf course or somewhere else.

The third factor in thinking about improving your short game is to make an assessment of the speed of the green and the breaks on the green. This is clearly made much easier if you have previously played on the course, as your assessment will be based on much more evidence. But even if you are relatively unfamiliar with how a green plays, you can still have an intelligent guess and your putting system will benefit as a result.

This is just a smattering of some of the things I picked up from this putting guide. And if you really want to turbocharge your putting then you should check it out. It got me much better results then just buying a new putter

To have a complete golf game you need to be properly in tune on the greens and have a proper putting system in place. This doesn’t need to be unduly complicated, or give you dozens of things to think about. In fact, the simpler it is the better it will work. In many ways the best golf is delivered when you are feeling at your easiest and most relaxed. It’s no coincidence that you shoot your lowest scores when there is no pressure to perform, and yet somehow seem to struggle when you are playing your boss or someone you really want to impress!

At least that is how I found it when I set out to improve my putting. I tried lots of different methods, and none of them really worked for me until I tried this system, and within a few weeks I was consistently putting much better.

Putting System – First Thoughts…

If we start to think about the reasons for why golfers struggle with putting, then a few factors instantly become clear as to why this is the case. The first of these is that golf is a sport that has an extremely closely entwined mind-body connection. Whatever you think translates into micro muscle movements that can be the difference between lipping a shot and having it go smoothly into the center of the cup. And over the course of a whole round that can translate into a ten shot difference in your final score. So this is something that you MUST get right in your putting system if you want to have any chance of achieving your best performances.

Here are Five Putting System Tips:

1/ Eliminating Tension –

Before you go to strike the ball first close your eyes and imagine a wave of calm descending on you. You can even imagine this as a green mist, or as being in a soothing, warm bath if you like. The key intention is to remove tension in your body and specifically in your torso and your arms. This may sound a little kooky, but it really works.

2/ Ball Striking –

The force vector that you can impose on a golf ball depends largely on where you strike it. So you need to ensure that you strike the ball squarely in the middle of the face. Again, this is something that it is important to check BEFORE hitting the ball, as otherwise you are not channelling the energy from the movement of your arm and torso effectively, and you will miss much more often.

3/ Mechanise Your Stroke –

Putting strokes are very personal things, and within any putting system you need to feel comfortable that you can consistently produce the same positive outcome (the golf ball in the cup!) To do that, it is worth taking a looking at the mechanics of how you strike the golf ball, and extrapolating from it the elements that work for you. This will differ between golfers, and so you need to start tuning in to your own personal striking patterns as you develop your putting system.

4/ Consistent Tempo –

As well as the other considerations above, you also need to be aware of both how much force you are exerting, as well as the velocity of the stroke. There are really then two sides to tempo. The strength and the follow through. You need to make sure that when you are striking the ball that this is done easily and effortlessly, as that will produce better results.

5/ Control Head Movements –

This is a big factor in why many people miss their putts. They may do many things correctly, but then just as they are taking the putt, they take a sneaky peek at the cup and in the process miss. Learning to be in sync with the green and trusting your instincts (Jedi Fashion), is a far surer recipe for having success in developing a personal putting system that produces success on the greens.

These and a lot of other different putting techniques are discussed here >>

This certainly helped me to lower my score, so perhaps it can do the same for you
